Turning Information to Knowledge – The Case of 3D Digitization of Ancient Artifacts and Scriptures.
Modern optical and computer-based digitization methods provide a large and fast increasing number of high resolution 3D models of ancient objects and writings. In this lecture, I shall discuss the drive to go beyond the documentation stage, and develop methods which address and shed new light on relevant historical and archaeological issues. I shall do this by describing some of the projects studied in the Computerized Archaeology Laboratory at the Hebrew University, with emphasis on the study of ceramics, cuneiforms and rock engravings.
