“Welscher Gast” (“The Italian Guest”) is an illustrated didactic poem written in Middle High German by the Italian clerk Thomasin von Zerklaere in 1215 for German speaking nobility. The epic-length poem with its cycle of 120 picture motifs is now being published in a comprehensive digital edition project at Heidelberg University. The facsimiles of all 24 preserved manuscripts are linked to the text transcriptions, on which a new critical edition is based. The transcriptions, made with special care for capturing the processual aspects of medieval writing, are being lemmatised and POS-tagged, thus allowing a computer-based variance evaluation not disturbed by orthographical divergences. New forms of critical apparatus are being developed for digital display. The pictures are annotated in their singular components, permitting a visual comparison of their evolution across the manuscripts. The textual as well as pictorial variance data is being analysed by phylogenetic methods. As a whole, the project aims to shape an integral interdisciplinary approach to a richly transmitted medieval work.
